The Fire That Would Not Burn

The Story

Long ago, the people in Ibrahim's town worshipped statues. But Ibrahim ﷺ knew the truth. These statues could not hear a prayer. They could not answer a question. They could not help anyone. Only Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, deserves our worship.

One day, when the people had gone away, Ibrahim ﷺ went to the place where their statues stood. He broke the statues into pieces, leaving only the largest one standing. He wanted his people to stop and think. Could their statues even protect themselves?

When the people returned, they were shocked. "Who did this?" they demanded. They brought Ibrahim ﷺ before everyone. "Rather, this largest one did it," Ibrahim challenged them. "Ask the idols, if they can speak." His words forced them to admit the truth. The statues could not speak. They could not do anything at all.

But instead of accepting the truth, the people became angry. "Burn him!" they cried. They prepared a blazing fire and cast Ibrahim ﷺ into the flames. To everyone watching, there seemed to be no escape. But Ibrahim ﷺ placed his trust in Allah.

Then Allah gave a command that no fire could disobey. "O fire! Be cool and safe for Ibrahim." At once, the fire became cool and safe. The flames did not harm Ibrahim ﷺ at all. Allah had protected him.

The people had planned to harm Ibrahim ﷺ. But Allah made their plan fail. Ibrahim ﷺ did not follow the crowd when the crowd was wrong. He stood for the truth and placed his trust in Allah. Real courage is choosing what is right, even when others disagree.

Dua of the Week: Rabbana 'alayka tawakkalna — the Dua of Trust

رَبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ

Rabbana 'alayka tawakkalna wa ilayka anabna wa ilaykal-maseer

"Our Lord, in You we trust. To You we turn, and to You is the final return."

Quran Verse: Surah Al-Anbiya 21:69

قُلْنَا يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلَامًا عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

"We said, "O fire! Be cool and safe for Ibrahim.""
