The Letter

The Story

Evening fell over Madinah, and the busy streets became quiet.

Imam Hussain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was at home when a messenger arrived.

The governor of Madinah, al-Walid, wanted to see him right away.

Hussain knew the message must be serious.

He went to meet the governor. Trusted members of his family came with him and waited nearby, ready to help if he needed them.

Inside, al-Walid told Hussain that Muawiyah, the ruler before Yazid, had died.

Then he read a letter from Yazid, the new ruler.

The letter ordered al-Walid to make Hussain promise that he accepted Yazid as ruler and would support him.

Hussain did not make that promise.

He said that such an important decision should not be made in secret. They could speak again when the people gathered.

The room became tense, but Hussain stayed calm and firm.

He left with his companions and returned home safely.

The letter had demanded a promise. Hussain had the courage to leave without giving one.

The house became quiet again, but Hussain now faced a difficult choice.

Honesty means more than telling the truth. It also means not making promises you cannot truly keep.
